swisspeace Annual Conference 2010
Bern, SwitzerlandInvitation to the swisspeace Annual Conference 2010
"Ballots or Bullets? The Potentials and Challenges of Elections in Conflict Contexts"
Elections have become a core element of most post-conflict peace-building. The goal is to legitimize governance and to promote stable democracy. However, empirical examples have shown that elections can also further or even cause renewed violence. swisspeace invites international experts to offer analytical insights into elections as a peace-building instrument in post-conflict societies and fragile contexts and to discuss practical experiences. The conference will critically look at some of the underlying liberal peacebuilding principles and explore the link between elections, violence and peacebuilding. We will address the role of the international community and how to make election processes more conflict sensitive.
We cordially invite you to join us for the conference on 16 November (Hotel National, Bern). Please find the detailed program attached. Register online at www.swisspeace.org by Friday 5 November 2010.
We look forward to welcoming you in Bern in November.
Sincerely,
swisspeace
