WCC general secretary visits Korea
“We are keen to learn about the life and challenges of Christians in Korea,” said Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit, general secretary of the World Council of Churches (WCC), at a press conference in Seoul on Wednesday 9 March. He spoke as leader of a WCC delegation to visit members of the Korean churches and government while laying practical foundations for the 10th Assembly of the WCC at Busan, South Korea in October 2013. The theme of the assembly will be “God of life, lead us to justice and peace.”
The theme was determined, he added, “as the result of a process of prayer, listening, reflection and asking together what vision we want to share: what vision can make a difference in Korea? We listened to specific proposals from Korea and Asia. This theme is a prayer to the God of life.”
Five full days are being spent in a series of encounters with Koreans who will be involved in preparations for the assembly and related events over the coming two years. The visit culminates in two Sunday services on 13 March when Dr Tveit will preach at morning worship in the Yoido Full Gospel Church and at evening prayer in Myungsung Presbyterian Church.
At the Wednesday press conference, Tveit predicted that “the time and energy of the assembly will not be confined to decision-making. Much of our time and energy is spent in sharing life, in mutuality.” He also remarked, “In a divided country we pray for justice, peace, reconciliation and a future together.”
