Introduction

For 13 years Christian churches in Bologna (Italy) have meet regularly to pray for peace.

These ecumenical meetings were started and promoted by Pax Christi, in collaboration with the Secretariat for the Ecumenical Activities, and the full participation with all the representatives of the Christian churches in the area. It has been since the beginning a shared journey to understand the Christian meaning of “peace”.

This year we have formulated together the prayer and we have shared a real “profession of faith” on the peace of Christ. This is because we think that the peace of Christ is most of all a profession of faith. More than a reflection, or a simple declaration, it is necessary to reach an ecumenical agreement on what we “believe” is the peace revealed by Christ.

This is how the text was born, and on 30 November 2008, during the ecumenical liturgy, it has been proclaimed by all the representatives and members of the Protestant, Orthodox and Catholic churches in Bologna.

We forward this text to you hoping that it will help along the way to Kingston.

WE BELIEVE

As Christians,
we believe in announcing the peace in Christ, the Gospel of God,
and we believe that the Church is a community called to faith in Him,
the Crucified and Risen One.

As Christians,
we cannot justify any war.
A just war cannot exist
because killing a person, even if guilty, can never be justified by a creed.
Life is the most important gift from the God of Life
but, as Jesus shows, it must not be defended with weapons.

As Christians,
we radically refuse the power of weapons.
We shall not plan, construct, sell, buy or use weapons.
We refuse any idea of peace built on weapons. 

As Christians,
we shall not contribute with our money, mediation or silence
to maintain a system of violence that kills
and in which, against our will, we are all involved and collaborating,
we shall not feign ignorance, keep quiet, and justify:
if we remain indifferent towards this suffering, we become seriously guilty.

As Christians,
we must, in words and in acts,
say STOP to this horror.
Those who at the Lord's Supper are nourished by God
cannot at the same time nourish themselves by war.

As Christians,
we believe that the Lord is peace,
that war is the contrary of God.
We believe in God's love,
we believe in His peace as a gift
which came about through the incarnation, death and resurrection of His Son.
We believe in His salvation, already present,
and offered to all humanity.    

This is our faith,
because it is the faith in the Son of God, the disarmed Messiah:
Like Him, we believe in God, who is the strength of Love,
who is Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
We believe in peace as a gift and a non-violent commitment,
pro-active and creative.
We believe that it is the way and the witness
which, in Jesus Christ, through the Holy Spirit
God has shown to His Church.

Introduzione

Da 13 anni, nella città italiana di Bologna, le chiese cristiane locali si ritrovano, annualmente, per una preghiera per la pace: si tratta di un vero e proprio cammino di scoperta sul significato cristiano di ‘pace’. Questi incontri ecumenici sono promossi da Pax Christi, in collaborazione con il Segretariato Attività Ecumeniche, ma con un coinvolgimento pieno dei rappresentanti delle chiese cristiane presenti nel territorio. Quest’anno siamo giunti alla elaborazione e condivisione di una vera e propria ‘professione di fede’ sulla pace di Cristo, perché pensiamo che la pace di Cristo sia soprattutto una questione di fede, e dunque più che una riflessione, o una semplice dichiarazione, sia necessario un accordo ecumenico su ciò che noi 'crediamo' della pace rivelata da Cristo. Così è nato un testo, che nel corso della liturgia ecumenica del 30 novembre 2008, è stato proclamato insieme, dai rappresentanti e fedeli delle chiese protestanti, ortodossa e cattolica di Bologna. Consegniamo dunque questo testo, nella speranza che possa essere utile al cammino verso Kingston.

Noi crediamo

In quanto cristiani,
crediamo nell’annuncio di pace di Gesù Cristo, che è il Vangelo di Dio,
e crediamo la chiesa come comunità chiamata alla fede in Lui,
crocifisso e risorto

In quanto cristiani
non possiamo giustificare nessuna guerra
non può esistere una guerra giusta
perché l’uccisione di un essere umano, anche colpevole, non può essere giustificata da una dottrina. La vita è il principale dono del Dio della vita
ma, sull’esempio di Gesù, non si difende con le armi

In quanto cristiani
rifiutiamo radicalmente il potere delle armi
non le possiamo progettare, costruire, vendere, comprare o usare
Rifiutiamo ogni idea di pace che si affidi allo strumento delle armi

In quanto cristiani
non possiamo contribuire col nostro denaro, con la nostra mediazione,
col nostro silenzio
al mantenimento di un grande sistema di violenza che uccide
e in cui tutti siamo, nostro malgrado, coinvolti e collaboratori:
non possiamo sapere, tacere, giustificare:
se restiamo indifferenti a questa sofferenza, dobbiamo ritenerci gravemente colpevoli

In quanto cristiani
dobbiamo dire basta all’orrore
con le parole e i fatti:
chi si nutre di Dio, alla cena del Signore,
non può anche nutrirsi di guerra.

In quanto cristiani
crediamo che Dio è Pace
che la guerra è il contrario di Dio.
crediamo nell’amore di Dio,
crediamo nella sua pace come dono
che si è realizzata nell’incarnazione, morte e resurrezione del suo Figlio
crediamo nella sua salvezza, già presente,
e offerta a tutta la fraternità umana

È questa la nostra fede
perché è la fede del figlio di Dio, il Messia disarmato:
come Lui, crediamo nel Dio che è forza d’Amore
che è Padre, Figlio e Spirito Santo
Crediamo la Pace come dono e impegno nonviolento
attivo e creativo
Crediamo che questa è la via e la testimonianza
che, in Gesù Cristo, mediante lo Spirito Santo,
Dio ha indicato alla sua chiesa
